Peanut butter cookies decorated with chocolate kisses, chocolate legs and candy eyes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter (no-stir kind)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 27 Hershey’s milk chocolate kisses (unwrapped)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 54 candy googly eyes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes on high speed).
  3. Mix in vanilla extract and peanut butter until smooth and creamy.
  4. Add the egg and beat until fully incorporated.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and baking soda.
  6. Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients and stir until just combined.
  7. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. This step keeps the cookies from spreading too much in the oven.
  8. Use a 1½-tablespoon cookie scoop to portion out the dough.
  9. Roll each dough ball in granulated sugar.
  10. Place on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each cookie.
  11. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until golden on the bottom.
  12. Immediately after baking, press a Hershey’s Kiss on its side into the center of each cookie. This will be the spider’s body.
  13. Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack before decorating further. (You can refrigerate them to speed up the process.)
  14. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips in 5-second bursts in the microwave, stirring between each round until smooth.
  15. Transfer the melted chocolate into a small zip-top bag and snip a tiny corner to create a piping bag.
  16. Starting at the base of the Hershey’s Kiss, pipe out eight thin legs extending onto the cookie.
  17. Dab a tiny bit of melted chocolate on the back of each candy eye and press them onto the Hershey’s Kiss .
  18. Allow the decorations to set before serving, or pop them in the fridge for quicker results.

Notes

Preparation, total time and any batch-cooking or cooling allowances are estimates, not kitchen-tested timings. Follow the per-tray baking range and doneness cues in the instructions. Allow all stated chilling, freezing and cooling time; larger portions and extra oven batches may take longer. The total-time allowance includes approximately 60 minutes for resting, chilling, setting or cooling; some tasks can overlap. Use a small piping bag or food-safe zip-top bag for the chocolate legs.
